Past Programming
We host ad hoc programs as the spirit moves us in addition to our regular programming. Our past programs included
Sigd Shabbat
In collaboration with our partners at CalActivit social justice collective in Israel, we put on The Sigd Shabbat we held on Sigd in collaboration with our local Beta Israel community and the Beta Israel community in Israel. We had a virtual conference with a prestigious academic professor who also is Beta Israel to teach the children about the history of the Sigd holiday, its unique aspects and the importance of Diaspora. We read books about Sigd and the kids played the shakers, drums and tambourines you see above in celebration. The kids learned the Morrocan Nusach to Leka Dodi and learned the components of Shabbat - Blessing of Candles, Blessing of the Wine and Blessing of the Bread. We then had kosher pizza and salad. The event was waiting list only. The kids then broke off from the adults to decorate Tzedakah boxes and learn the real social justice meaning of Tzedakah as we discussed the difference between Tzedakah and Charity. We had free play singing and Birkat HaMazon after. The kids helped clean up and we said good bye to each other.
Teens Martin Luther King Day Workshop at SAJ Synogogue
We were invited to the prestigious SAJ Synogogue and it was a beautiful zine making and JOC history session with the teens of SAJ. We practiced Hebrew, did a Trivia session, learned about the Jewish Connections to the Civil Rights movement, Rabbi Heschel (z’l) and the Civil Rights that Jews of Color are still fighting for throughout the world. The children asked interesting and thought provoking questions and blessed the instructor as that is the tradition. It was beautiful. The cover of the zine is featured to the left.
