Join us as Dr. Brahim El Guabli and Laura Elkeslassy share stories and insights that bridge cultures and experiences in a panel format. The panelists will discuss their relationship with diaspora and the impact that the Moroccan land had on their identity, spirit, life and work. Dr. Brahim El Guabli is an Associate Professor at Williams College with a newly published book Desert Imaginations: A History of Saharnism and its Radical Consequences. Dr. El Guabli's work focuses on Maghrebi and Middle Eastern Literature, including trauma and memory, Saharan imaginations, Jews in Arabic literature and film, transitional justice processes, Marxist Leninist movements, Afro-Arab solidarities and decolonization movements. Dr. Guabli's new book, breaks down the concept of Saharanism and tells the history and context of current events and the literary, artistic, ritualistic and scholarly practices of desert Indigenous peoples.
Laura Elkeslassy, MFA is a singer, actor and educator based in Brooklyn. Born in France, with Moroccan roots, Laura blends Judeo-Arab, Middle Eastern and Andalusian repertoires in her music. Her current work focuses on reclaiming the Moroccan Jewish liturgical tradition and the North African musical heritage from a feminist standpoint. Laura has an upcoming album Ya Ghorbati! by Ayin Press.
